Upcoming fighting game Pokkén Tournament has been generating a lot of buzz among Pokémon fans worldwide. To build the hype, an hour-long livestream was broadcast in Japan showing some never-before-seen footage of the game. Among all the gameplay was a surprise announcement: the ghostly Gengar will be joining as a playable character!
Gengar was one of the original 151 collectible monsters in the first generation of Pokémon. And he’s definitely a fan favorite — his reveal trailer introduces him as the winner of a 2014 Pokémon popularity contest on Twitter.
In Pokkén Tournament, he makes up for his stubby limbs by attacking with his tongue, performing lunging body slams, and utilizing tricksy teleportation fake-outs. He can make his body incorporeal to let attacks pass right through him, and of course, he has access to his fearsome Mega Evolution to dish out serious pain.
Check out the reveal trailer (uploaded by YouTuber MaxEzzy) to see not only Gengar in action, but also famed producer Katsuhiro Harada in a Pikachu costume:
Gengar! Definitely one of the most memorable Pokémon from Gen 1, and a very interesting choice for this game. He’s certainly not shaped like your average Tekken character, but they clearly made it work anyway. As always, I’m hoping this game somehow makes it stateside, so I can kick some Normal-type butt online…
