Announced during a livestream, Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time will be released on PlayStation 4, and 3DS, and Nintendo’s upcoming console, currently codenamed NX, is also being considered. The game will be built alongside third-party developer Orca and will be directed by Takeshi Uchikawa. Long serving Dragon Quest composer Koichi Sugiyama will return to score the game.
The PlayStation 4 version will be built on the Unreal Engine 4. The 3DS version will have two aesthetics, with a more recent graphical style being displayed on the top screen and a more retro style on the bottom screen. No details on the NX version were given. No release date was provided either but next year marks the 30th anniversary of the series.
Dragon Quest X was also announced for a PlayStation 4 release in Japan, and a NX version is also being considered.
The Dragon Quest series has always been one that doesn’t get the same attention here in America as it does in Japan and as a result, my experience with the series is mostly limited to the very first game on the NES. However, it’s always been a franchise I wanted to get into. I hope this game sees a release and a big marketing push in Western markets so more Western gamers are aware of it.
