Sony has announced that the PlayStation 4 has surpassed 40 million sales — continuing as “the fastest selling console in history.”

Beyond the impressive hardware sales milestone, Sony also divulged that they have seen strong software sales, with over 270.9 million copies sold at retailers and the PlayStation Store.

CEO Andrew House added to the press release with the following statement:

“We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time. We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services.”

To sell 40 million units, after only being on the shelves for two and a half years, is quite the prodigious accomplishment.

My Opinion:

I bet the parties at PlayStation right now are pretty insane. A non-stop shindig over the past two years….no wonder why the first-party games aren’t releasing. What will be interesting is to see if PlayStation Neo continues or halts the party.
