Settlement building, strategy game Northgard revealed

Send your fiercest warriors to colonize new lands and battle powerful creatures from Norse mythology.

Evoland developer Shiro Games has revealed its newest project — a strategy and exploration game (that infuses RTS elements) based around Norse mythology called Northgard.

In it, players are tasked with establishing settlements, assigning tasks to Viking warriors, managing resources, expanding/discovering new lands, surviving the elements plus, and waging conflict with enemies. Multiple type victories can be achieved against either the AI or other people.

The official elevator pitch:

“Northgard is a strategy game based on Norse mythology in which you control a clan of Vikings vying for the control of a mysterious newfound continent.”

About the Game:

“After years of tireless explorations, brave Vikings have discovered a new land filled with mystery, danger and riches: Northgard.

The boldest Northmen have set sail to explore and conquer these new shores, bring fame to their Clan and write history through conquest, trading, or devotion to the Gods.

That is, if they can survive the dire wolves and undead warriors roaming the land, befriend or defeat the giants, and survive the harshest winters ever witnessed in the North.”

Key Features:

  • Assign your vikings to various jobs (Farmer, Warrior, Sailor, Loremaster…)
  • Manage your resources carefully and survive harsh winters and vicious foes
  • Expand and discover new territory with unique strategic opportunities
  • Achieve different victory conditions (Conquest, Fame, Lore, Trading…)
  • Play against your friends or against an AI with different difficulty levels and personalities

It essentially — at least superficially — looks like the medieval colony management sim Banished, with a smidgen of The Banner Saga thrown in there.

At the moment there is no word on a release date (though it is expected to ship this year) or price. The game is currently only listed for PC.

My Opinion:

I’m sold. Though the studio’s last two games — Evoland and Evolland 2has me worried, as they weren’t very great games. Nor anything like this one. This is a completely different swing by the studio, I just hope it pays off.
