Mortal Kombat returning to the big screen has been in some stage of development for years. Now the reboot of the MK film franchise has taken another step to becoming reality.
Variety is reporting that Simon McQuoid is in talks to direct the film for New Line. McQuoid is a filmmaker who has largely gained notoriety for his commercial work, directing campaigns for PlayStation, Halo, and Range Rover. His hiring follows the previous development of James Wan being announced as producer of the film. The popular fighting game franchise was last seen in theaters with the 1997 release of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.
It is good to see the film gaining some traction, but I’ll start to get excited about the movie when I see actual footage. It seems like a MK film has been talked about for a number of years now, but always stalls out in development. I hope this new reboot is a return to the gritty R-rating of the first film and delivers serious fighting action.
