According to Ubisoft’s Ubiblog, Watch Dogs has sold more copies in the first 24 hours than any previous Ubisoft title.
While failing to announce exactly how many copies of the game were sold, Ubisoft’s co-founder and CEO, Yves Guillemot, stated, “Watch Dogs is an amazing achievement and our teams should be proud that the creativity, innovation and long hours they invested in making this game are paying off. It’s great to see so many customers enjoy playing the game, and it shows that Watch Dogs has cracked the code for developing a new blockbuster IP and a thoroughly new-gen experience.”
While this is very exciting for the fledgling IP, it is important to remember one day sales mean very little if the game doesn’t manage to keep it up.
My Opinion:
While I’m happy to hear this, I think these sales can be explained by looking at the gaming landscape. This is one of the few AAA titles so far to be released on current last generation platforms (with the exception of Nintendo, so far). Not only that, but there has been an extreme game draught — gamers are practically begging to spend some money. While the game has received generally favorable reviews across the board, the sales are more a product of the environment. Either way, it is a good thing! I want to see this title be annualized as well.
