Sega promised to reveal a new gameplay mode for Alien: Isolation at E3, and today they have. Alongside the single-player campaign, Creative Assembly’s survival horror game will feature series of time trials.
Joystiq’s Sinan Kubba described the time trials as a“[combination of] the game’s space-based scares with an inherent need to get a move on.”
Players are tasked with getting through specific areas quickly while the Xenomorph lurks in the shadows, hunting. Rewards are given out for not using the motion tracker, finding ID tags, and doing other level-based objectives while maintaining high amounts of speed.
It is unclear if the time trials are adaptations from the campaign or levels built from the ground up.
Two things jump out at me here. The first is, “So like Mirror’s Edge time trials but with a monster chasing you?” Cool! The second is, “Won’t these time trials and the act of failing over and over jade the player to the Xenomorph’s ability to invoke terror?” The first sounds fun, the latter sounds like a potential problem.
