PlayStation Consoles Outsold Xbox 3:1 Last Quarter

Sony released its financial report for Q1 2014 (April 1 – June 30), which revealed some really  interesting information.

According to the report, Sony sold 3.5 million units of PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 combined to consumers during the last three months.  Even though they didn’t release how many each console sold by themselves, that is still more than three times the 1.1 million that Microsoft announced Xbox consoles sold during the same time period.  One reason the Xbox sales may have been so low is that the price drop was announced a month in advance, thus only giving it a month to work with before the quarter was over.

Another thing worth noting is that during the same time, PSP, Vita, and Vita TV sold a combined 750,000 units.

My Opinion:

Even though I have been paying close attention to sales numbers this console generation, I had no idea that the difference was still this much!  It will be far more interesting to see if this trend continues during the next two quarters.  Now the Kinect-less Xbox One is out on the market for the same price as the PlayStation 4 and there are far more upcoming AAA Xbox One exclusive titles coming out than for PlayStation 4 in 2014.  How much of an effect will this have on sales numbers for the rest of the year?  My bet is that it will start to even out much more by the time 2015 rolls around.
