Sony has announced that PlayStation 4 has reached the 1 million sales threshold in the UK according to MCVUK.
Fergal Gara, Sony UK’s Managing Director, announced yesterday that the PS4 has reached 1 million sales in 42 weeks, making it the second fastest selling home console after Nintendo’s Wii (38 weeks). It is interesting to note that the PS4 has beaten its predecessor, PS3, by a full month.
Gara claims that a significant portion of the PS4’s success descends from players outside of the PlayStation ecosystem, whether it be Xbox fans taking the ‘leap’ across to the PS4 or newcomers, choosing the PS4 as their first console.
“We have certainly seen the PS3 consumers come across hard and fast,” Gara explained. “But a very significant proportion are people we have never seen on our network before. And from their behaviour and the types of games they are playing, it’s fairly clear that a big chunk of those have come across from Xbox, which is tremendous to see. And there;s a chunk that look like they’re brand new to gaming. And they’ve picked PS4 as their first serious gamer.”
Sony’s financials revealed earlier this year that PlayStations were outselling Xboxes 3:1, although the exact figure for how much the PS4 consoles are outperforming Xbox One console sales is still unknown.
This is very indicative of the situation of worldwide of who’s winning the console ‘war’. UK has been predominantly Xbox 360 within recent years and to see PS4 reaching 1 million sales befor XB1 just demonstrates how Microsoft besmirched the XB1’s image.
