Xbox One Leads Japanese Hardware Sales Despite Slow Launch

In an report earlier today, IGN revealed launch numbers for Xbox One’s first six days on the Japanese market. The report says Microsoft’s latest console sold 23,562 units during its launch. This immediately draws an comparison to the 300,000 units that Sony’s PlayStation 4 moved in its first two days in the same market.

It is worth noting however that neither of these two consoles match what Nintendo’s latest console, the Wii U, had during it’s first three weeks. Here is a comparison of the two Japanese consoles first three weeks, according to IGN.

Wii U’s numbers:

Week Dates Sales
Week 1 December 3-9, 2012 308,142
Week 2 December 10-16, 2012 126,916
Week 3 December 17-23, 2012 122,843
Total 557,901

Playstation 4’s numbers:

Week Dates Sales
Week 1 February 17-23, 2014 309,104
Week 2 February 24-March 02, 2014 65,685
Week 3 March 03-09, 2014 35,294
Total 410,083

The Xbox One has a rather paltry first week by comparison, however it is still outselling the other console manufacturers by raw numbers, if not overall install base. According to 4gamers.net, the Xbox One was the leading hardware seller for the week. Here is the data: (Translated by Gematsu)

Hardware Sales (followed by last week’s sales)

  1. Xbox One – 25,674 (N/A)
  2. 3DS LL – 23,624 (30,111)
  3. PlayStation Vita – 14,441 (19,578)
  4. Wii U – 7,349 (8,584)
  5. PlayStation 4 – 7,299 (6,502)
  6. PlayStation 3 – 6,139 (7,895)
  7. 3DS – 5,931 (7,404)
  8. PlayStation Vita TV – 910 (1,156)
  9. PSP – 288 (187)
  10. Xbox 360 – 126 (86)

My Opinion:

It’s always going to be rough for a foreign company to launch a video game product in Japan. Not only is the console business suffering there compared to previous generations, but the market there has not been overly warm to Microsoft’s consoles in the past. At least Microsoft can put a notch in their belt by saying they are the best selling console in Japan this week, but that is small comfort if you consider the number of units sold probably didn’t come close to cover the costs of manufacturing, shipping and marketing for this launch.
