Nintendo Shares Wii U Profits for Q2

Nintendo has released its financial reports for the last quarter, and they indicate that Wii U sales saw a noticeable spike.

According to the financial documents, from July to September Nintendo’s console managed to sell 610,000 units last quarter, almost double what the system sold during Q2 last fiscal year. These sales were no doubt aided by the release of Hyrule Warriors and, according to Nintendo, Mario Kart 8’s staying power.

While these sales figures aren’t record-breakers, they are a positive sign for Nintendo’s struggling console. The Wii U has sold 7.29 million units in its lifetime, having released on November 18, 2012. With the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and amiibo figurines this November, Nintendo is banking on the Wii U having a big holiday season. This could end up happening as the hype for Smash Bros. continues to build towards its November 21st release date.

My Opinion:

These sales figures are surprising and yet aren’t surprising at the same time. Nintendo consoles find a way to sell. As badly as the Wii U has sold so far in its lifespan, I am surprised that Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors are the games that helped it sell. I’m not surprised that it sold that many units though, because it is a Nintendo console, and it is awesome. Still yet, a sales increase of any amount is nothing for Nintendo to complain about. Here’s to hoping Smash Bros. can knock it up to around 10 million lifetime units after this holiday season.
