We already knew that Rise of the Tomb Raider is an Xbox timed exclusive, but now we know even more details about the partnership between Square Enix and Microsoft.
Rise of the Tomb Raider was announced during E3 this year, but it was later during Gamescom that it was revealed it would be an Xbox exclusive. Both Microsoft and Square Enix have been relatively silent on the deal. Now, Aaron Greenberg, head of marketing at Xbox, has tweeted that Microsoft is publishing the game.
To get more information, Game Informer contacted Microsoft. They told them,
āTo further clarify Aaron Greenbergās tweet yesterday, yes, Microsoft will be publishing āRise of the Tomb Raiderā on Xbox. Similar to how we worked with Capcom on āDead Rising 3ā or Harmonix on āDance Central,ā weāre very excited to partner with the amazing team at Crystal Dynamics to bring āRise of the Tomb Raiderā in holiday 2015, exclusively to Xbox. Ā Both our team and the Xbox community are huge fans of the franchise and we canāt wait to share more on the game in the future.ā
Square Enix provided more information to Game Informer,
“Yes, Microsoft will be publishing āRise of the Tomb Raiderā on Xbox. Microsoft has always seen huge potential in āTomb Raiderā and they will get behind this game with more support across development, marketing and retail than ever before, which we believe will be a step in continuing to build the āTomb Raiderā franchise as one of the biggest in gaming.”
āOur partnership with Microsoft on āRise of the Tomb Raiderā does have a duration, but we arenāt discussing those details at this time and are focused on collaborating to deliver a great game on Xbox One and Xbox 360.ā
Rise of the Tomb Raider is not the only third party exclusive to be revealed recently. Sony announced Street Fighter V as a PlayStation exclusive this past weekend. Both of these games may be setting a trend for this console generation.
My Opinion:
I have mixed feelings about Rise of the Tomb Raider being exclusive to one console. I am still hopeful it will come to PlayStation, and I also hope that this does not become a recurring practice.
