The 8th generation of consoles has become a regular place for remasters. Anything from a simple port, to a large overhauls — name a popular 7th generation game, and there is a decent chance it has been,or will be remastered.
That being said, one of the most demanded remasters — the Mass Effect trilogy — has yet to see current-gen consoles. And that is because, surprisingly ,EA is the last big publisher to stray away from the arms race of remastering games. Previously, EA has emphasized the company was looking ahead to new projects and had no interest in dipping into its back catalog for remasters. More specifically, EA had said a remaster for the Mass Effect Trilogy was not something the company was looking into at all.
Well it look’s like that has changed. It now appears EA is looking to jump on the cash cow of remasters with everyone else. In a conversation with Game Informer at EA’s Gamescom welcome event, Soderlund strongly hinted that EA is working on remastering the beloved sci-fi trilogy.
When Game Informer asked about EA’s current status as the last man standing on remasters, and any changes in plans to remaster the Mass Effect trilogy, Soderlund said the following.
“What’s changed is that there is proof in the market that people want it, maybe more than there was when we spoke. There were some that did it before, but I think there is even more clear evidence that this is something that people really want. The honest answer is that we are absolutely actively looking at it. I can’t announce anything today, but you can expect us most likely to follow our fellow partners in Activision and other companies that have done this successfully.”
Soderlund went on to add about the challenges of about choosing what to remaster and how to remaster it:
“We have to be careful in choosing the right brands for the right reasons at the right time,” he explained. “A remaster is something that you can just do or do it really well. I want to make sure that if we were to do it, we would do it really well and that people feel that it’s the same game but it feels so much better in this new shape and form. There have been titles that have come out that have done it really well, and there have been others that maybe haven’t done it so well. We just want to make sure that we stay in the ‘done it really well’ camp.”
With Mass Effect Andromeda on the way — and Soderlund reassuring it will still launch in its original window — you would have to assume the remaster is around the corner.
Mass Effect 2 is my favorite game of all time, and the series as a whole is probably my favorite in video games. If EA were to release this — with all the DLC — I will easily lose 2-3 months playing through the whole trilogy again. For like the 9th time.
