DOOM Won’t Be Ready To Be Shown Until 2015

Over the weekend, id Software had their 18th annual QuakeCon down at Dallas, Texas. The major news to come out of QuakeCon was the gameplay footage of DOOM 4. DOOM 4, or simply titled DOOM, was first announced during E3 with a teaser trailer stating that more footage will be shown at QuakeCon.

Now that time has come and gone and footage has been seen by attendees, it seems that it will be the only way to see the DOOM gameplay footage for some time.

Speaking with PC Gamer, Bethesda Softworks VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines said that the game won’t be shown to the public until next year; “I try really, really hard for this to be a dev first, dev-lead thing. We’re working with them to say, ‘How does this work? What do we want to show?’ And they’re like, ‘Look, we don’t want a stream to go up for a game that isn’t at the point where we would formally show it to the world, and now that thing is getting picked apart, and digested, and gone through frame-by-frame and getting nitpicked to death, when normally we wouldn’t be showing this to anybody at all.”

They do have plans to show off DOOM sometime next year. The best guess is that it will be at E3 2015, so unless there is a leak of the DOOM gameplay footage, don’t expect it to see it until E3.

The last proper DOOM game to come out was in 2004 for the PC and Xbox. There was a re-release in 2012 titled DOOM: BFG Edition which included every game in the DOOM franchise. Gamers wondered if the re-release was a way to see if people still cared about the franchise, and apparently it satisfied id Software and Bethesda to make the next DOOM game.

My Opinion:

After the Watch Dogs fiasco, I don’t blame id Software and Bethesda at all. Releasing gameplay footage so soon would create impossible expectations of the game, especially when a game is a work-in-progress. I just want the best DOOM game that they can make, and if that means I have to wait a good while for gameplay footage, then so be it.
