Review: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (PS3)

I’LL FACE MYSELF… AGAIN

In 2012, the world was graced with an odd little game called Persona 4 Arena. The premise of the joint project was simple: Arc System Works (of Guilty Gear and BlazBlue fame) would make an all-new 2D fighting game using the characters, world, and story of Atlus’ Persona series. It was pretty good! It wasn’t a perfectly balanced fighter by any means, but it wasn’t broken, and saw a good amount of tournament play. Two years later, and we finally received a follow-up: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Does this newcomer manage to build on the solid foundation of the previous game? Continue reading Review: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (PS3)

FIFA 15 Review

KICKIN’ IT 2015 STYLE

I have always felt like soccer is one of the best international sports out there. I love the World Cup, both men’s and women’s; Olympic soccer is my favorite part of the summer games and I love the mystique that international superstars have. That being said, any non-World Cup year is difficult for me. FIFA 15  is still a solid soccer sim, and there have been a few improvements this last year that help make up for the lack of international action.

Retro Review: Halloween Atari 2600

DOES THIS CLASSIC ATARI GAME STILL MAKE THE… CUT?

Halloween for Atari 2600 is one of the earliest horror games out there. It actually predates the term “survival horror” by over a decade. It is currently one of the rarest and most valuable Atari 2600 games out there, routinely selling for over $100 for the cartridge by itself (most Atari games sell for around $1). Unfortunately, due to its rarity, age, the fact that it is out of print, not on any digital collections, and on a system that isn’t produced any more, you will have to brush up on your eBay skills to actually play this one.

Hyrule Warriors Review

IT’S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE; TAKE THIS…

As a proper 80’s kid, I have had plenty of fun cranking up and down the 8-bit fields of Hyrule in the original The Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System. There’s something about Nintendo-made games that just ooze honed gameplay and polished mechanics. Flash forward to the 90’s: no longer a kid, I’m still having fun playing such Nintendo fare as Wind Waker on my GameCube, but I can also been seen playing a curious series called Dynasty Warriors on my PlayStation 2. I’m still having a hell of a time. Omega Force always made the Warriors games fun, if a bit repetitive. These games, like none other that I was exposed to, set you on a battlefield in an epic army-on-army fight during the fabled Romance of the Three Kingdoms era.

Now, flash forward one last time to the end of September. You find me playing Hyrule Warriors. Somehow, a culmination of all the previous works of both Nintendo driven Legend of Zelda games and the Dynasty Warriors games. Dropping the pseudo-historical perspective, this game is set squarely in the fictional Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda series. It seems like quite a gamble to merge a beloved series such as Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors. Did it work? Did Omega Force and Team Ninja manage to create a successor to the Legend of Zelda franchise? Does a coat of Zelda paint improve the Dynasty Warriors formula? Read on to find out.

Wasteland 2 Review

SWEET, SWEET, NOSTALGIA

The original Wasteland released over 25 years ago in 1988. To put that in perspective, that is five United States presidents, seven Olympics and six console generations ago. Perhaps the greatest legacy of the original game was the Fallout franchise. It was supposed to be Wasteland 2, but a feud with EA forced a name change. Finally we have a true sequel to the original game and a game that can proudly stand with the PC-RPG greats.

The Keep Review

Don’t Get Lost in the Dungeons!

Dungeon RPG games have always captivated players. The allure of exploration, the intellectual challenge of solving problems, and the anticipation of monsters jumping out, all combined into a great gaming experience. Now, what would happen if we add real-time combat to the mix? The Keep is the well-crafted creation of all these components.
