WHERE COOKING AND EXPLORING MAKES A NICE APPETIZER

Monster slaying is often a staple ingredient in crafting a well-seasoned JRPG. To spice things up, the developers at Rideon Japan mixed in some cooking mechanics and farming elements. If this concoction sounds like an appealing dish, then Adventure Bar Story is just the meal for you! Continue reading Adventure Bar Story Review

UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Frontier Developments appear very much at home when rollercoasters are at the forefront of their games. From the famous Rollercoaster Tycoon series, to the slightly less-known Thrillville, Frontier is now bringing their rollercoaster construction (and destruction) expertise to the new generation in the form of Screamride. But just how fun is the ride? Continue reading Screamride Review

Titan Invaders

One look at Titan Attacks! and you’ll be instantly reminded of Space Invaders. There’s no point in hiding it, Titan Attacks! is heavily inspired by the 1978 arcade classic but don’t be disappointed. Space Invaders was a classic for a reason and while I doubt Titan Attacks! will be remembered with the same reverence, it won’t be laughed at either. Continue reading Titan Attacks! Review

Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines Review

A LOT OF FIRE HEART

Alfa System‘s Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines isn’t exactly what it appears on the surface if you’re unfamiliar with its 1999 PlayStation predecessor, Ore no Shikabane o Koete Yuke (roughly translating to “Over My Dead Body”). Certainly, the story is fairly up-front from the start. It’s medieval Japan, and the nation’s collection of holy artifacts have mysteriously gone missing. Sorcerer Abe no Seimei convinces the emperor that the only way to appease the gods for this dire tragedy is to sacrifice the entire clan who was responsible for protecting the holy places. Many years later, things aren’t great in the absence of the artifacts, and the gods still aren’t satisfied, so they resurrect the sacrificed clan in order to finally end the chaos. As the leader of this clan, you are tasked with hunting Seimei down to reclaim the lost artifacts. Besides purely seeking vengeance and justice, you must also eliminate him in order to lift the Curse of Broken Lineage and the Curse of Ephemerality he placed on your clan. And that’s where the game takes a turn, though not necessarily for worse.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 Episode 3 Review

DEATHTRAP DUNGEON

As we get closer to the end of Resident Evil Revelations 2, there have been a few consistencies across all the episodes so far, and I have no doubt that the same will be applied to the final episode next week. Instead of explaining it all again, I’ll be doing a quick bullet point of things that are still relevant to Resident Evil Revelations 2: Judgment.

The Awakened Fate Ultimatum Review

NOT-SO-ROGUELIKE

What if God was one of us? It’s been 20 years since the question was asked in that one-hit wonder song by Joan Osborne, and now we finally have the answer! Turns out it involves God crawling through a series of randomly-generated dungeons, bludgeoning the life out of a legion of creatures too cute to be called monsters. At least, that’s how it seems in the new RPG from Nippon Ichi Software, The Awakened Fate Ultimatum. Does it blaspheme the name of the great roguelike genre, or will it convert you to a true believer? Continue reading The Awakened Fate Ultimatum Review

Ori and the Blind Forest Review

AN EXERCISE IN PERFECTION

Admittedly, Xbox One hasn’t had a lot going for it so far — with the exception of Sunset Overdrive, the Microsoft exclusive titles have either come hand in hand with scandal or have been subpar. What’s worse, it is well noted how nearly every multi-platform game runs better on PC and PlayStation 4. With all of that said, no one game has single-handedly turned around my opinion of a console and its future than Ori and the Blind Forest.

TINY HAWK: PLATFORM SKATER 2

There is a time in a boys’ life when they have an obsession with skateboarding. For me that time was in the early 2000s, right around the time Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 came out. Tony Hawk was an icon. Everyone had one of those finger skateboards and no one knew how to use them. Everyone had a real skateboard and even less knew how to use them. Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Review

The Almost Great Unknown

The visual novel is a genre that has been coming into its own for sometime now. While much more prevalent in Japan, games like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, and the recently popular Danganronpa have started to gather a growing fanbase for visual novel games in the US. With Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters, Toybox Games enters the visual novel genre with an offering that begins with a lot of promise, but falls just short of creating an engaging experience.
