The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth Review

MOTHER KNOWS BEST

Three years ago saw the release of Binding of Isaac on Steam. Edmund McMillen designed the game, and it developed a devout fanbase. Now, in 2014, Binding of Isaac has been brought into a new engine, received new gameplay elements, and ported to consoles. Continue reading The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth Review

Sunset Overdrive Review

BOOM GOES THE TEDDY BEAR

Not only is Sunset Overdrive my first re-introduction to Insomniac Games since Spyro the Dragon, but it is also my introduction to Xbox One titles. And what an introduction it turned out to be. Finding itself as an insane cross between inFAMOUS and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Sunset Overdrive delivers a high-octane, laugh-out-loud experience sure to delight any fan of video games.

The Swapper Review

This review has been updated to also reflect the Wii U release of The Swapper.

 CHANGING MINDS ON SPACE-PUZZLERS

It had only been a week since my review of Constant C–a sci-fi platform puzzler with an overarching story about the mass death of a space station–when I was tasked with reviewing The Swapper. Avid readers of this site will know that Constant C is the lowest reviewed game on our website to date. Let’s just say I wasn’t thrilled to be playing another “space puzzle” so soon. After ten minutes of playing The Swapper, my mind had been changed. After thirty minutes, I was hooked by the captivating story. By the end, I had questioned all of my in-game decisions and immediately dived back in. The Swapper is a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stale genre and will undoubtedly change the minds of non-believers. Continue reading The Swapper Review

Tetrobot and Co. Review

TINY ROBOT, BIG CHALLENGE

Last year, developer Swing Swing Submarine released a PC puzzle game called Tetrobot and Co. The game was received lovingly by puzzle fans. Just a few days ago, the game was ported to Wii U by Neko Entertainment. So how does it fare on Nintendo’s home console? Continue reading Tetrobot and Co. Review

Civilization: Beyond Earth Review

CIVILIZATION: BEYOND EARTH, BUT NOT FAR

Civilization, the 4x heavyweight champ, is a standard bearer for the genre, but to me, it is that and more. Many moons ago, when I was a wee lad, I came across Sid Meier’s Civilization (SMC) on my elementary school’s computers. I can’t be sure how I happened upon it, nor do I care to ruin the memory with facts. All I know is that AC / BC to me means After Civilization / Before Civilization. School lunches and recesses were spent inside, frantically trying to finish a couple more turns. This game franchise, more than any other, I credit with really sparking my love of gaming. How fitting it is to be my first review. How serendipitous, the timing couldn’t have been better. So then, it is with a heavy heart that I say this, Civilization: Beyond Earth  (C:BE) could have been better.

Civilization is a franchise owned and developed by Firaxis Games. The company is best known for its Civilization series of games, though it has had notable success with other titles as well, such as XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Fantasy Life Review

THE BEST KIND OF CHORE LIST

If I can only take away one thing from Fantasy Life, it is that I was reminded just how bad my ADHD is while playing.  Level-5 did a fantastic job filling the world of Reveria with hundreds of side quests that will keep you busy, and in my case, sidetracked me from continuing the main quest for many hours at a time.  However, a large amount of content is not good enough to make a game great, and luckily Level-5 knows that.   Continue reading Fantasy Life Review

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse Review

PART-GENIE. PART-PIRATE. FULL-ADVENTURE.

The flurry of 2D platform games continues to be in the forefront of numerous indie developers. Some of these games are diamonds in the rough, while others are just flat out rough.  In the third Shantae game, Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is happily one of those treasures for the Nintendo 3DS. Continue reading Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse Review

Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones Review

NOT YOUR AVERAGE CLONE

Indie developer Curve Digital has made a name for itself in the gaming community. They have put together quite an impressive portfolio of games that includes Velocity Ultra, Thomas Was Alone, and The Swapper. After the critical triumph of their stealth puzzle platformer, Stealth Inc.: A Clone In the Dark, Curve Digital is looking to clone its quality in the first sequel the studio has made (see what I did there?). With all the success that Curve has, it would be blasphemous for Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones not to follow suit. Continue reading Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones Review

Pix the Cat Review

“HEY PAC-MAN, MEET SNAKE!”

If you are one to enjoy the pure arcade fun of games like Pac-Man and Snake, then Pix the Cat should be right up your alley. Pasta Games, developer of Rayman: Jungle Run, is making their first foray into the home console market with Pix the Cat on PlayStation 4, but also sticking to their roots with a handheld version on the PlayStation Vita.
