Halloween for Atari 2600 is one of the earliest horror games out there. It actually predates the term “survival horror” by over a decade. It is currently one of the rarest and most valuable Atari 2600 games out there, routinely selling for over $100 for the cartridge by itself (most Atari games sell for around $1). Unfortunately, due to its rarity, age, the fact that it is out of print, not on any digital collections, and on a system that isn’t produced any more, you will have to brush up on your eBay skills to actually play this one.
As a proper 80’s kid, I have had plenty of fun cranking up and down the 8-bit fields of Hyrule in the original The Legend of Zelda on the Nintendo Entertainment System. There’s something about Nintendo-made games that just ooze honed gameplay and polished mechanics. Flash forward to the 90’s: no longer a kid, I’m still having fun playing such Nintendo fare as Wind Waker on my GameCube, but I can also been seen playing a curious series called Dynasty Warriors on my PlayStation 2. I’m still having a hell of a time. Omega Force always made the Warriors games fun, if a bit repetitive. These games, like none other that I was exposed to, set you on a battlefield in an epic army-on-army fight during the fabled Romance of the Three Kingdoms era.
Now, flash forward one last time to the end of September. You find me playing Hyrule Warriors. Somehow, a culmination of all the previous works of both Nintendo driven Legend of Zelda games and the Dynasty Warriors games. Dropping the pseudo-historical perspective, this game is set squarely in the fictional Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda series. It seems like quite a gamble to merge a beloved series such as Legend of Zelda and Dynasty Warriors. Did it work? Did Omega Force and Team Ninja manage to create a successor to the Legend of Zelda franchise? Does a coat of Zelda paint improve the Dynasty Warriors formula? Read on to find out.
