The British Academy Games Awards took place April 6th in London, England with a number of diverse games from last year being celebrated for their achievement. While award shows in general often result in much discussion about the merits of nominees/winners, they do serve an important function. Awards act as a spotlight and a reminder of great achievement in any particular year. The BAFTA Games Awards served this function and further illustrated the place smaller titles occupy alongside bigger block-buster games. As one of a select few Nintendo fans who were able to get hands-on time with the Nintendo Switch, I knew that I wanted to try the big three: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Splatoon 2. Once I demoed those, I began exploring the lesser known titles. To my absolute delight, Snipperclips – Cut It Out, Together! quickly turned this not-so-known title into a top-tier demo experience.
With a release date finally announced for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, fans and sceptics alike have a renewed sense of curiosity in the latest iteration of the series. The saying “iron sharpens iron” is a belief in the fact competition among peers will make both parties stronger. That having a rival or opposing force to push you, will only lead to achieving new heights and avoiding remaining stagnant or complacent. Clearly this is not a mantra Nintendo fully believes in when it comes to its online services. While Microsoft and Sony have continued to add value to their online ecosystem, Nintendo is sadly lagging behind.
