Armello Review

“I AM THE WATCHER ON THE WALL: REDWALL, THAT IS”

League of Geeks’ gorgeous role-playing strategy game, Armello, is, most likely, the closest that we will ever get to venturing out in a Redwall-inspired world. As a huge fan of the Redwall series as well as Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire, I found this game to be a perfect collection of the essences of whimsical fantasy and grim tales of daring adventure in a dying land.

Until Dawn Review

Oh Death

Until Dawn has had a long and strange road to its eventual release on PlayStation 4. Originally announced as a PlayStation 3 title utilizing the PlayStation Move controller, Until Dawn has been revamped, reworked, and is now out as a PlayStation 4 game utilizing far more traditional controls. Before we get into my review of the game, here are a few caveats. I’m a a big horror movie fan, especially of the slasher genre. I don’t generally play a lot of horror games, survival in particular, have never really gelled with me. My expectations for Until Dawn were cautiously optimistic; this seemed like a game I wanted, I’ve never really had the strong urge to play as a cop/photographer/sweet dude who is part demon while battling against hordes of zombies/ghosts/other sweet demons, but I have wanted to see someone take a stab at doing a game that dwells in the slasher drama. I wanted to play as a group of irresponsible teenagers being picked off one by one. Until Dawn seemed like it would offer that, but it also seemed liked an idea that could be really lukewarm if failing in execution, and there were some warning bells considering the amount of time it took to get Until Dawn to market. The question is, how did Until Dawn come out?

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture Review

A Little Tenderness

The newest game to be developed by The Chinese Room and Santa Monica Studios, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is likely to become the next greatest example where critics can point in the blossoming art medium of gaming. Much like The Chinese Room’s 2008 PC title Dear Esther (spiritual predecessor to Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture), this first-person, story driven adventure game allows players to explore and interact with its world in order to uncover the mysteries surrounding its quiet, abandoned landscape, and to delve into some of the more subtly colored fabrics of humanity. Sounds deep, right? Well it is, but quite like arguments aimed at Dear Esther, it makes us question the definition of “game,” and whether that definition even has a place in modern day entertainment.

Game of Thrones: A Nest of Vipers Review

SNAKES… I HATE SNAKES

If you weren’t expecting Game of Thrones Episode Five: A Nest of Vipers to ramp up the action, then you’ve clearly not spent enough time in Westeros. As the penultimate episode of the season, Episode Five finally shows just how far some Forresters will go in order to defeat their enemies. While Telltale Games chose to give certain characters a bit more screen-time than others, it seemed warranted in order to build to a finale to rival the first episode of the season.

Legend of Kay Anniversary Review

MEDIOCRITY ISN’T THE WAY

Some games are like a fine wine – only gets better with age. Other games are like a carton of milk – after a couple of weeks, it’s already spoiled. Legend of Kay Anniversary is the 10 year re-release of a PlayStation 2 game that doesn’t stand the test of time. Although it’s clear that there are elements of the game that seem fun for its time period, nearly every aspect of Legend of Kay feels too antiquated and old to hold most gamers interest for very long.
