The Awakened Fate Ultimatum Review

NOT-SO-ROGUELIKE

What if God was one of us? It’s been 20 years since the question was asked in that one-hit wonder song by Joan Osborne, and now we finally have the answer! Turns out it involves God crawling through a series of randomly-generated dungeons, bludgeoning the life out of a legion of creatures too cute to be called monsters. At least, that’s how it seems in the new RPG from Nippon Ichi Software, The Awakened Fate Ultimatum. Does it blaspheme the name of the great roguelike genre, or will it convert you to a true believer? Continue reading The Awakened Fate Ultimatum Review

Ori and the Blind Forest Review

AN EXERCISE IN PERFECTION

Admittedly, Xbox One hasn’t had a lot going for it so far — with the exception of Sunset Overdrive, the Microsoft exclusive titles have either come hand in hand with scandal or have been subpar. What’s worse, it is well noted how nearly every multi-platform game runs better on PC and PlayStation 4. With all of that said, no one game has single-handedly turned around my opinion of a console and its future than Ori and the Blind Forest.

TINY HAWK: PLATFORM SKATER 2

There is a time in a boys’ life when they have an obsession with skateboarding. For me that time was in the early 2000s, right around the time Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 came out. Tony Hawk was an icon. Everyone had one of those finger skateboards and no one knew how to use them. Everyone had a real skateboard and even less knew how to use them. Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters Review

The Almost Great Unknown

The visual novel is a genre that has been coming into its own for sometime now. While much more prevalent in Japan, games like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, and the recently popular Danganronpa have started to gather a growing fanbase for visual novel games in the US. With Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters, Toybox Games enters the visual novel genre with an offering that begins with a lot of promise, but falls just short of creating an engaging experience.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Review

PINK, SPHERICAL, AND BEAUTIFUL

After nearly a decade, the spiritual sucessor to Kirby and the Canvas Curse for the Nintendo DS has arrived in the form of Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. With beautiful visuals, simple gameplay, and intricate mysteries, Kirby’s debut on the Wii U is a beautiful rainbow that was worth the wait.  Continue reading Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Review

Dragon Ball Xenoverse Review

GOING SUPER SAIYAN ON NEW CONSOLES

Dragon Ball Xenoverse is Bandai Namco’s latest 3D-fighter featuring everyone’s favorite Z fighters. What separates this title from other Dragon Ball fighting games is the components it takes from the MMO Dragon Ball Online. Xenoverse combines flashy fast-paced brawling with enticing RPG elements and an addictive loot system to become the definitive Dragon Ball fighting game. Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Review (PS3)

ROUND 3. FIGHT!

Dead or Alive 5 Last Round has had a rather troubled launch so far. The game was supposed to launch February 17th on all platforms, but technical issues saw the PlayStation 3 release pushed back a week (with the Steam release moved to March 30). The past couple weeks have seen a myriad of players complaining of game-breaking bugs in the current-gen and Xbox 360 releases, some resulting in losses of save data for previous versions of the game. It looks like a big mess. While Team Ninja tries to sort all that out, I was able to spend some bug-free time with the far more stable PS3 version of the game. Are the last round of updates to Koei Tecmo’s 3D fighter worth a third look? Continue reading Dead or Alive 5 Last Round Review (PS3)

There Came an Echo Review

DISTANT ECHOES

There Came an Echo is the second game by independent game developer Iridium Studios. A squad-based, voice-controlled real-time strategy game that’s heavy on the story, the title follows Corrin (voiced by Wil Wheaton) and a cast of characters that includes some from Iridium’s Sequence. After meeting the ambitious $90,000 goal on Kickstarter.com, There Came an Echo has finally found its release on Steam (PC), but where has that money gone?

htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary Review

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION

When it comes to developing and planning video games, the puzzle genre is arguably the hardest to nail. It requires balancing the intellect of your audience with the difficulty of the puzzle — a proper puzzle will give players the pieces needed, challenge them, and bring an “Aha!” moment to tie everything together. While nearly all puzzle games make or break it based on the puzzles, htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary for PlayStation Vita is made artificially difficult by the plodding controls, making for one of the more painful games in recent memory.
