LAYERS OF FEAR REVIEW

ABSTRACT HORROR

I returned to find my home in its usual state of disarray. Rats scurried underfoot, disappearing into cracks in the walls as I moved toward the staircase. Papers and books lay spread over the the dining table, lit candles flickering nearby with each whistling breeze which cut through our decaying home. I blinked, my eyes barely adjusted to the dim lighting before a noise beckoned me from the kitchen — and what I saw next was bloodchilling. This is Layers of Fear. Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Review

CRUMPLED AND FOLDED

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam is the type of game that leaves you with a worse impression than you think it deserves. At its foundation, Paper Jam is a solid if simple turn-based RPG much like the rest of the Mario & Luigi series whose charming comedic quips can appeal to both children and fans of the Mario series. For the most part, that foundation keeps the game engaging enough throughout its 25-30 hour run time. However, what’s built on that foundation drags the overall experience down with its creatively pisspoor implementation of the Paper Mario world, constant backtracking, and fruitless busy work. By the time I saw the credits roll, Paper Jam had long worn out its welcome.

FINAL FANTASY EXPLORERS REVIEW

A SINGLEPLAYER PERSPECTIVE

I arrived on the island of Amostra a few short days ago and began my journey as an explorer. Crystals are a hot commodity, y’see, and this isolated land is rich with ‘em! Hunting them down seemed like an easy way to make a living. Then I stepped into the lush, wind-swept plains of Leggi Steppe, and a realization struck me — this place is infested with monsters! Welcome to Final Fantasy Explorers. Continue reading FINAL FANTASY EXPLORERS REVIEW

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers Review

LEGO’S ASSEMBLE!

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is the latest iteration of the LEGO videogame franchise, following in the footsteps of LEGO Jurassic Park, LEGO Batman, and other popular licenses. Promotion and buzz on the game promised an immense open-world, gigantic character list, and faithfulness to the Marvel cinematic Universe (MCU). Though the game can suffer from overly-simplistic challenges, LEGO Marvel’s Avengers is a fun, captivating, and exciting gaming experience.  Continue reading LEGO Marvel’s Avengers Review

RESIDENT EVIL: ORIGINS COLLECTION REVIEW

THE ORIGINS OF TERROR

With the survival horror genre achieving a resurgence in recent years, it seems fitting that one of the most iconic franchises from its early days is reliving past glories as well. As Capcom aims to return the Resident Evil (RE) series to its frightful roots, they have begun to re-release past successes while awaiting the inevitable seventh entry in the series. Combining the freshly-polished remake of the original RE, now dubbed Resident Evil HD (REHD), with a beautifully remastered edition of Resident Evil 0, Capcom has provided the perfect survival horror starter kit for gamers. That Dragon, Cancer Review

FEAR’S OIL SALESMAN

About halfway through That Dragon, Cancer, I came across a scene that was very solemn like most of the scenes before it. I explored the area, looking at handprints of children in a cancer ward until it opened up to reveal several greeting cards strewn around the room. I checked each one before leaving the room, revealing that the whole center was littered with them. Each card was different in tone, some positive and some negative, but all were about cancer patients. Some were survivors, some were still fighting – many had lost. It’s a powerful moment and as I started to read the cards in the bigger area, I started to cry. The sheer attrition from each card I read overwhelmed me. Even after I composed myself, I wound up crying again later. And yet, this is all completely optional. As soon as you enter the bigger area, you can very quickly see the way to leave this scene entirely. You don’t need to read all the cards, you don’t need to read any of them really; I didn’t have to cry. However, I was determined to read each and every card in that section. I refused to leave one card unread, one person ignored, and that’s what That Dragon, Cancer does so well. It makes you care, it gets you invested, and appeals solely to your emotions, for better or worse. Continue reading That Dragon, Cancer Review

Just Cause 3 is Just Good Enough

It’s Just “Okay”

With the success of Just Cause 2, it was safe to say that developer Avalanche Studios would no doubt deliver a stellar performance when releasing the next game in the series, Just Cause 3. The open world sandbox shooter is filled with destruction and chaos, with some of the most brilliant explosions I’ve seen in a game. Unfortunately big bangs and shiny graphics are not the only things a game needs to be great, and while Just Cause 3 is fun, it does have its fair share of problems.
