No Man’s Sky Review

An infinite universe with limited possibilities.

Loneliness is pervasive in the wide open expanses of space. From the moment that your eyes open on your first planet to your thousandth landing, the feeling of utter isolation is stifling, but tranquil. This is but one of the double edged swords that defines No Man’s Sky, a game that is both beautifully innovative and lifelessly monotonous.

Dueling Outlooks: Nintendo NX

Nintendo NX is easily the year’s biggest gaming mystery. Speculation and theories have saturated message boards and news feeds in an attempt to uncover the secret to the company’s brand new gaming platform. And after the recent report by Eurogamer, seemingly everyone has an opinion.

The all but confirmed supposition that NX is a high-powered handheld device ripped through the internet when it broke last week. Since then we have had time to create opinions for ourselves as well as listen to the opinions of our favorite gaming personalities. When speaking of any big Nintendo news, two notions always crop to the surface; the news will save or sink the beloved developer.

Pokémon Go’s refreshing take on open world gaming

I want to be, the very best. Like no one ever was. To catch them is my real test, to train them is my cause.

These words bring a flood of intense nostalgia for a host of twenty-somethings that had their childhoods shaped by Nintendo’s iconic Pokémon franchise. They are trigger words that transform us into excited children inspired by the adventure and friendship that beckons us into the greater world. 20 years after many of us first experienced the wonderful Pokémon Red and Blue, that promise has finally been fulfilled.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild hints at a reimagined Nintendo

When Nintendo announced its E3 2016 plans, or rather lack thereof, in the months leading up to the conference, many were disappointed with the news. And rightfully so. For Nintendo to show only one game at the biggest video game presentation of the year was simply unprecedented.

It turned out to be a brilliant move that I believe foreshadows the company’s future.

Sony raises the bar for E3 presentation perfection

If you have been following the E3 2016 festivities, you are well aware of the clinic that Sony put on during their PlayStation press conference on Monday night. The console maker and publisher put its foot on the gas and did not relent for the entirety of the 70 minute runtime. Rather than let suits and developers gush about their games, Sony chose to let the games do the talking.

The industry needs to take note, because Sony just provided the blueprint to the perfect E3 show.

New Destiny expansion ‘Rise of Iron’ leaked

A new Destiny expansion, titled ‘Rise of Iron’, has been leaked through marketing materials that appeared on Reddit on May 19th.

The poster features Lord Saladin, a NPC who runs the monthly multiplayer event ‘Iron Banner’, wielding a large hammer in front of a snow covered ruin with wolves at his side. Kotaku confirmed the authenticity of the image with its sources, which also added that the expansion will feature a “likely fallen themed” raid and be “larger than both year-one DLC packs.”

The leak seems to follow Activision’s previous assertion that it will release “a large new expansion” in 2016 to be followed with a sequel sometime in 2017. Expect to discover details of the new content during the PlayStation E3 press conference on June 13th.

Destiny was originally released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 in September 2014. It was followed by The Dark Below and House of Wolves in Year One, with The Taken King kicking off Year Two in September 2015.

My Opinion:

Destiny has had some serious competition in the form of The Division since the release of the stellar Taken King. It is good to know that Activision isn’t leaving the game on life support until the release of the sequel in 2017. Destiny‘s raids are some of the best gameplay experiences out there, so it is promising that this will include a new challenge for players. However, it remains to be seen if the expansion will be able to bring me or other guardians back amidst a stellar fall lineup.
