Well it’s certainly been a year. In late February, we were able to attend New York Toy Fair in New York City and were able to see all of Funko’s latest and greatest items. But since the pandemic, we were not able to post these photos. Happily, we’re showcasing them now!
For the second year in a row, EA has kicked off the E3 festivities with a press conference that featured interesting reveals and awkward moments. While retaining its focus on mainstream hits, the showcase offered intriguing new angles on established franchises mixed with promising first looks at new IP. Ending with an extended look at Star Wars Battlefront 2 multiplayer, EA’s presentation was an obvious step up from their first EA Play event.
When EA was initially announced as an exclusive video game partner with Lucasfilm for Star Wars, we reached for our collective blasters waiting for the polarizing publisher to make the first slight on the beloved property. Then the announcements came – a third-person action game from Visceral Games headed by Amy Hennig of Uncharted fame and a Star Wars Battlefront revival from the Battlefield experts at DICE – and we holstered and rejoiced. But the release of Battlefront in 2015, along with the numerous failings to live up to the Death Star-sized expectations that come with reviving a fan-favorite franchise, led to a salvo of well-deserved criticisms. Season passes are the black sheep of the gaming community. They deviously pry into our collective wallets in search of our precious cash, often in exchange for content we don’t fully understand. This earns them a spot atop our hit lists, and whenever a new pass is announced we grab our torches and pitchforks and set out to pillage the internet with angry comments across the datascape. The only thing that rivals the ire that season passes draw is, arguably, Nintendo. And luckily for us, these two juggernauts of vitriol crossed paths when Nintendo announced a season pass for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The fall has always been the busiest part of the gaming year. The end of September sees the beginning of a yearly onslaught of games that puts constraints on every wallet and day planner in the industry. For the players, the fall was the beginning of the arduous wait until our Holiday wishes were made reality. Black Friday was the date that put a hard cap on the season and virtually guaranteed increased success for an individual game or publisher.
And it is in the process of losing its relevance.
